Getting Around San Francisco
Welcome to San Francisco! Whether this is your first visit or your tenth, one of the best things about this city is how easy it is to explore without a car. San Francisco packs a remarkable amount into just seven square miles — neighborhoods, views, and great food are often only a short walk or a quick ride apart. Our hotel sits right in the middle of it all in SOMA, steps from BART and Muni, the historic F-line streetcars, and the cable cars that will carry you up toward Nob Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf. Union Square, the Ferry Building, and the waterfront are all within a comfortable stroll. Below you’ll find everything you need to get here from the airport and get around once you’ve arrived — public transit, rideshare, parking, and accessibility information — so you can spend less time figuring out logistics and more time enjoying the city.
Transportation Resources
Plan Your Trip
511.org — The Bay Area’s official trip planner. Real-time arrivals, service alerts, and route planning across every agency. Also available by phone at 511.
Google Maps / Apple Maps — Both include live Muni and BART schedules and work well for door-to-door directions.
Transit app — A popular free app for real-time Muni and BART arrivals.
Paying Your Fare
Clipper Card — One card for BART, Muni, Caltrain, ferries, and every other Bay Area transit system. Add it to your phone’s Apple or Google Wallet before you travel, or buy a plastic card at any BART station.
Tap to Pay — You can now tap a chip-enabled credit or debit card directly at Muni readers and BART fare gates for a standard adult fare. No card or app needed.
Getting from SFO to the Hyatt Regency SOMA (50 Third St) — about 45 minutes total
1. Get to the BART station at the airport
- If you land at the International Terminal, the BART station is right there — just follow the “BART” signs.
- If you land at Terminal 1, 2, or 3, take the free AirTrain Red line (runs every few minutes, signs everywhere) and get off at the stop called “Garage G / BART Station.”
2. Pay your fare
BART no longer sells paper tickets. Buy a Clipper card at the machines by the fare gates (credit card or cash), or add Clipper to your phone’s Apple/Google Wallet before you go. Load about $15 — the trip runs roughly $11–12 one way.
Tap your card or phone on the round target at the gate to enter. Keep it — you tap again to exit.
3. Ride to Montgomery Street station
Board the train toward Antioch (the yellow line). Every train leaving SFO heads toward San Francisco, so you can’t really go the wrong way. Ride about 30 minutes / 8 stops and get off at Montgomery St. Stations are announced and shown on screens.
(If a train says “Millbrae” only, skip it — that one goes south, away from the city.)
4. Walk to the hotel — about 5 minutes
Tap out at the exit gate and follow signs to the street level / Market Street.
Once on Market Street, walk northwest (the direction where street numbers on cross streets go up: New Montgomery → 3rd Street).
At Third Street, turn left. The Hyatt Regency is right there at 50 Third Street.
A few tips
Give yourself more time on weekends and after 9pm — trains run every 20 minutes instead of every 10–15.
Trains have luggage space, but there’s no dedicated rack; keep bags in front of you.
BART — Direct service from SFO’s International Terminal to downtown, about 30 minutes and roughly $11–12. From Terminals 1, 2, or 3, take the free AirTrain Red line to “Garage G / BART Station.”
SFO Ground Transportation — Official info on shuttles, taxis, rideshare pickup zones, and accessible transport.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) — Roughly $50–80 from SFO depending on traffic and time of day. Pickup is on the departures level at domestic terminals.
Muni — Buses, light rail, historic streetcars, and cable cars. Adult single ride $2.85 with Clipper or contactless ($3.00 cash), good for 120 minutes. A Day Pass is $5.70.
Visitor Passport — Unlimited Muni rides including cable cars: $15 (1 day), $35 (3 days), $47 (7 days). Worth it if you plan to ride a cable car more than once.
Cable Cars — $9 per single ride, no transfers. Note: fares are scheduled to rise in January.
Lyft Bikes (Bay Wheels) — Station-based bike and e-bike share throughout downtown and the waterfront. Rent through the Lyft app.
Taxis — Flywheel and YoTaxi apps hail licensed SF cabs; the hotel front desk can also call one.
Hotel Valet parking is $79.00 plus tax per vehicle per day.
