Increasing Equity for Online Learners: Course and Campus Level Strategies
First, the good news: Overall retention and success rates for online learners have almost reached parity with those for on-ground learners. However, there's still work to do: Large, equity-based achievement gaps still exist for a number of student sub-populations, such as Black/African-American and Latinx students, first generation students, and foster youth. Since equity issues extend beyond the online course environment, Dr. Kevin Kelly will share practical examples, tools and strategies for you to address equity issues at the course and campus levels; as well as lessons learned through his work in support of Peralta Community College District's Equity Initiative. There will be something for everyone--online faculty and instructional designers; faculty development and academic technology staff; tech support and student services staff; and campus leaders.
About Kevin Kelly: Dr. Kevin Kelly lives at the intersection of Education and Technology. He works with colleges and universities as a consultant to address academic technology, distance education, and organizational challenges. This fall will mark 20 years for Kevin teaching courses as a Lecturer in the Department of Equity, Leadership Studies, and Instructional Technologies at San Francisco State University. In previous lives, he took on leadership roles with two edtech startups dedicated to faculty development and student success, and with faculty development and academic technology teams at SF State.
Currently, Kevin is under contract for two books: 1) Going Alt-Ac: A Guide to Alternative Academic Careers (co-authored with Katie Linder and Tom Tobin) to be released in 2019; and 2) Advancing Online Teaching: Creating Equity-Based Digital Learning Environments (co-authored with Todd Zakrajsek), due for release from Stylus Publishing in 2020. He has also created several Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning courses, including Teaching with technology and Learning with your mobile device.

Sabba’s experience spans K-16 having led 1:1 mobile learning initiatives at Keck USC and Fairmont Preparatory Academy. Sabba is a former Social Science teacher and Apple Distinguished Educator and is currently pursuing her Ed.D. at USC in Global Executive Education.

Academics and higher education professionals often struggle with imposter syndrome, self-doubt, stress, and anxiety. In this interactive keynote, Dr. Katie Linder shares how these challenges can be mitigated through the cultivation of Radical Self-Trust, a taxonomy she developed to help others increase their capacity for steadfast self-awareness and self-loyalty. Join Dr. Linder as she shares tools for cultivating Radical Self-Trust through six foundational methods: seeking self-knowledge, nurturing your superpowers, playfully experimenting, living your core values with intention, practicing loving kindness toward yourself and others, and settling into your life’s purpose.

About Katie Linder: Dr. Katie Linder is an avid writer and researcher with a passion for process and peeking behind the scenes at what it takes to be a successful academic. She is the creator of the Radical Self-Trust Podcast Channel and the host of a weekly interview-based podcast called Research in Action. Katie’s most recent book is Managing Your Professional Identity Online: A Guide for Faculty, Staff, and Administrators. Currently, she directs the Oregon State University Ecampus Research Unit.
For the past several years, Katie’s work has focused on blended course design best practices, institutional supports for accessible online learning, and research literacy for scholarship of teaching and learning practitioners and distance education stakeholders. She speaks on topics related to writing and publication; creativity and productivity; self-promotion and personal branding, and teaching and learning with technology. Katie is also an Associate Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation.
Katie is under contract for her fourth book Going Alt-Ac: A Guide to Alternative Academic Careers (co-authored with Kevin Kelly and Tom Tobin) to be released in 2019. She is also the editor of a forthcoming book series, Thrive Online, due for release from Stylus Publishing in 2019.
