Online Learning Enters Its Next Generation -- It's Not Merely an Extension of the Past

Web-based online learning started more than two decades ago. Discussions of online learning are now in the national media, sometimes describing it as the same thing we've seen for years, but other times describing it as "this time everything changes". A more useful view is that online learning is entering its next generation, and we are in the midst of an inflection point in higher education driven by mainstream adoption, different platform designs, and moving beyond the digitization of traditional classroom. This talk will explore the major trends around online learning and the implications that will affect colleges and universities over the coming decade.

Phil Hill (@PhilOnEdTech) is Co-Publisher of the e-Literate blog, Co-Producer of e-Literate TV, and Partner at MindWires Consulting. As a market analyst, Phil has analyzed the growth of technology-enabled change for educational institutions, uncovering and describing the major trends and implications for the broader market. His unique graphics and visual presentations have been widely used in the industry. As an independent consultant, Phil helps educational institutions, technology and content vendors, and policy makers as they consider and implement new initiatives. Phil’s clients have included Western Governors University, California Community College System, Iowa State University, Bournemouth University, Pearson Education, Coursera, and others. Previously Phil was an independent consultant through HBO Systems and Delta Initiative. Educational Technology: The Possibilities and Perils

The opportunities afforded us through educational technology are astounding. However, there are an abundance of perils we can encounter, if we do not think critically about our use of these tools. In this session, you will hear from innovators who are expanding what’s possible in educational environments through the use of technology. We will also explore together some of the dangers of leveraging technology in an uncritical manner. In this interactive presentation, Bonni will share some of the most compelling lessons from her Teaching in Higher Ed podcast guests and will invite you into the conversation to contribute your wisdom.

Bonni Stachowiak gets the privilege of speaking with exceptional educators on a weekly basis, as the host of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. Since 2014, her podcast has provided a space to explore the art and science of being more effective at facilitating learning. Teaching in Higher Ed also explores how to improve our productivity, so faculty can have more peace in our lives, and be even more present for our students. Bonni is the Director of Teaching Excellence and Digital Pedagogy at Vanguard University of Southern California. She’s also an Associate Professor of Business and Management and teaches a few times a year in an Educational Leadership doctoral program. She’s been teaching in-person, blended, and online courses throughout her entire career in higher education. Bonni and her husband, Dave, are parents to two curious kids, who regularly shape their perspectives on teaching and learning.

You’ll explore the role of visionary leadership in supporting school transformation and see how new learning resources support emerging trends in education.

Dr. Jon Landis is part of Apple's International Education team, working with school leaders to leverage technology to transform learning. Prior to Apple, Dr. Landis served as a college of education professor, chemistry teacher, school principal, curriculum director and information technology director. He holds a Ph.D in Sociology, a Masters in Education Leadership, and a BS in Chemistry.
