Chuck Dziuban - Nov. 27, 5:00-6:00 pm

Digital Learning Research: Working in the Margins of Uncertain Mediation

Chuck will present the results of twenty-five years of research on digital learning at the University of Central Florida-one of the largest universities in the United States. He will document its inception from an interesting innovation to where online learning is major component of the institution’s culture. This involves multiple course modalities, unbundling of the traditional classroom, institutional outcomes and the creation of an enduring culture of the scholarship of teaching and learning. Long term results will include: student success and satisfaction, reasons for choosing digital learning, challenges encountered in that modality and implications of the Anna Karenina principal for effective teaching and learning. Chuck will demonstrate a decision tree rule for what students consider an excellent learning environment. Finally, he will discuss the need for working partnerships to better understand effective higher education.

Charles Dziuban is Director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He has been a faculty member since 1970 and is the founding director of the university’s Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. Since 1996, he has directed the impact evaluation of UCF’s distributed learning initiative examining student and faculty outcomes as well as gauging the impact of online, blended and lecture capture courses on the university. Chuck has published and presented widely; his most recent book is Conducting Research in Online and Blended Learning: New Pedagogical Frontiers. Chuck's methods for determining psychometric adequacy have been featured in both the SPSS and the SAS packages. Chuck has received numerous honors throughout his career, and in 2012 the University of Central Florida initiated the Chuck D. Dziuban Award for Excellence in Online Teaching for UCF faculty members in honor of Chuck’s impact on the field of online teaching and learning.

Marcia Chatelain - Nov. 28, 9:00-10:00 am

Social Media for Social Change: Using Digital Tools Today to Respond to Tomorrow's Challenges

Marcia Chatelain is Associate Professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University. The author of South Side Girls: Growing up in the Great Migration from Duke University Press, she teaches about women’s and girls’ history, as well as the history of black capitalism. She is currently working on the book From Sit-In to Drive Thru: Black America and Fast Food in an Age of Crisis, which is under contract with Liveright Publishing, a division of Norton and Company. Chatelain’s book will examine the intricate relationship among African American politicians, civil rights organizations, communities, and the fast food industry. Chatelain has published pieces in TheAtlantic.Com, The Washington Post, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. She has also contributed to the popular podcast, “Undisclosed,” serving as the resident historian on a narrative arc about the 2015 killing of Freddie Gray by members of the Baltimore Police Department. In 2016, the Chronicle of Higher Education named her a Top Influencer in academia. During the 2017-2018 academic year, she will be on leave from Georgetown with support from a National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Fellowship.
