Cynthia Alexander, Distance Education Coordinator, Cerritos College

Dr. Cynthia Alexander is the Distance Education Coordinator for Cerritos College and also Department Chair for the Educational Technology Program.  She has developed and taught online courses for over 14 years and has participated in numerous online courses as a student.  In addition, she has developed and conducted workshops and trainings in the areas of online accessibility, copyright, and classroom assessment techniques and also written online teaching certification courses for two colleges.

Jean-Pierre Bayard, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Technology Initiatives, the Director of Academic Technology & Creative Service (ATCS), and Professor (on-leave) of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at California State University, Sacramento.

ATCS is responsible for faculty technology support and training, eLearning, and the development and production of media materials in support of teaching and learning. In addition, ATCS provides media production services for state and local agencies on a contract basis. Major Sac State policy initiatives accomplished under Dr. Bayard's direction include a new campus eLearning policy, establishing hybrid and online courses as legitimate course modalities, and a new policy allowing departments the option of using online course evaluations. As the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Technology Initiatives, Dr. Bayard's responsibilities include the supervision of the Center for Teaching and Learning, advising the Provost on IT matters and representing him at faculty senate and other administrative committees dealing with IT issues, and helping the Division of Academic Affairs plan and deliver strategic level programs in which technology plays a central role. 

Maggie Beers,Ph.D., Director of Academic Technology at San Francisco StateUniversity 

Dr. Beers oversees the units that provide services, and best practices, for online learning and teaching, technology development, media distribution and support, learning spaces, and creative services. She has an appointment as Associate Professor in the Equity, Leadership and Instructional Technologies Department in the College of Education. Maggie has a dark past: she is the immediate Past-President of DET/CHE, Past-Chair of the CSU Directors of Academic Technology, and Past Captain of her high school tennis team, if that counts. At SF State, she co-chairs the Campus Technology Committee and participates on many advisories, including the Executive Technology Council, the Educational Technology Advisory Committee, the Center for Teaching and Faculty Development, the President's Task Force on Accessibility, and the All University Committee: Staff, Faculty, Staff and Student with Disabilities. A former foreign language instructor and textbook author, Maggie lives in San Francisco with her multilingual family that includes her Generation Y children, various virtual and living pets, and a plethora of mobile devices. 

Michael Bouchoukian, Project Manager and Systems Programmer, Academic Technology Services, UC Davis

Michael oversees the Remote Asset ManagementSystems, AV Software Development and support operations focused on applications for Instructional Technology systems. He also designs learning spaces and manages the buildout of those projects, for the University, including UC Davis Professional Schools.

Michael has been involved in Educational Technology for the past 17 years. For several years he was a High School Teacher in the Midwest; he also spent several years in the California Community College system as an Instructional Technology Systems Designer/ Trainer and was heavily involved in distance education and online learning. He lives in the East Bay with his wife and two children – along with their pug - Zara.

Kaye Bragg, Ph.D., Interim Associate Vice President for Academic Programs and Faculty Development, CSU Dominguez Hills

Dr. Bragg coordinates a new faculty orientation program, faculty development center activities, and initiates inter-division collaboration for online instruction and curriculum review of general education courses at CSU Dominguez Hills.  She uses her academic background in comparative politics to engage faculty in new program initiatives, assessment activities and problem solving of student issues.  She also served as the acting dean and associate deanin the College of Business Administration and Public Policy at this campus.  Prior to this appointment she was at CSU Bakersfield as the Director of the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center and Assessment Office for 6 years.  In this position she was the campus representative to the CSU Faculty Development Council, a member of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education, and an active presenter at Lilly Conference on College & University Teaching and CSU Regional symposium on University Teaching. 

Geoff Cain, Director of Academic Technology, College of eLearning & Extended Education at Humboldt State University

Geoff's interests include open education resources, and online learning and support. He is a former community college instructor where he taught English both face-to-face and online. 

BrettChristie, Academic Technology Services, CSU Chancellor's Office

Priorto his current position with California State University, Academic Technology Services, Brett worked as Director of Faculty Development at Sonoma State University for 7 years, bringing over 20 years teaching experience in Educational Technology, Teacher Education and Kinesiology. In addition to teaching, he has served in leadership roles in multiple state and national projects, such as EnACT (U.S. DoE), Access by Design (NSF), Light Bridge, and Building the Digital Bridge. The primary focus of these projects has been on faculty development opportunities, effective and innovative uses of instructional technology, and supporting students with disabilities. Brett has also served as Coordinator of the Accessible Technology Initiative for SonomaState University, and was President of the California State University, Faculty Development Council.

Most recently, Brett has been involved in faculty development leadership efforts related to Universal Design for Learning, Quality Online Learning and Teaching,and Transforming Course Design. Many of these projects have involved the use of Faculty Learning Communities toward a more effective teaching and learning relationship between instructors and students. In relation to these efforts, Brett has personally developed, and overseen the development of, multimedia online resources with a high degree of usability and sustainability.

Kathy Fernandes, Director, CSU LMS Project, Chancellor's Office, Director of Academic Technology, CSU Chico

Kathy Fernandes manages a variety of CSU system-wide projects for Academic Technology Services in the Office of the Chancellor. She works amongst the 23 campuses in support of top Academic Affairs priorities, including Reducing Bottlenecks and Improving Student Success Initiative, Learning Management Systems Services and other multi-campus learning technology projects which seek to scale exemplary practices across the CSU, create economies of scale to reduce costs, develop shared services to increase shared expertise, and/or incubate innovations to enable campus technology adoption in a successful manner. Kathy supports the CSU Directors of Academic Technologies which includes managing, communicating and negotiating with vendors who provide technology and services to many of our campuses.

Previously Kathy worked for 25 years at Chico State. Her last position was Director of Academic Technologies managing 33 staff and 30 students with a $2M budget that included responsibility for the campus learning management system, the faculty technology and learning program, classroom technology services, web services, online and distance education delivery, media production services, print and computer graphics, photography, grants and state contracts.

Kathy has an MA in Instructional Design with Technology, BS in Computer Science and BA in Mathematics. She attended the Frye Leadership Institute in June 2007.

Jay Field,Associate Vice President/CIO, Long Beach City College

Jay is Associate Vice President for Instructional and Information Technology Services (IITS) and CIO at Long Beach City College. IITS is comprised of 5 units each reporting to a Director – Academic computing and Multimedia Equipment Services and Support (classroom technology, computer labs, videoproduction), Applications Development and Support (Peoplesoft, enterprise applications), Instructional Technology and Distance Learning (faculty support, LMS), Network Services (data center, infrastructure, networks, telephony), and User Support & Web Development (desktop support, campus web server and web applications development). He is currently overseeing the Instructional Technology and Distance Learning unit. He co-chairs (with a faculty member) LBCC's Technology Oversight and Distance Learning Implementation Oversight Task Forces and serves on the Systemwide Architecture and Telecommunications and Technology Advisory Committees for the California Community Colleges. He chaired last year's EduSoCal conference at Loyola Marymount University.

James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning, College of the Canyons

James Glapa-Grossklag is Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning at College of the Canyons. He supervises Distance and Accelerated Learning, Educational Travel, Libraries, and Tutoring. He serves as project director for the Distance Education Captioning and Transcription Grant, designed to support California CommunityColleges in making distance learning universally accessible. His external roles include serving as President of the Advisory Board of the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources,  board member of the Directors of Educational Technology/California Higher Education, board member of the Instructional Technology Council, an advisor to the Lumina Foundation on educational technology, and a member of the ACCJC Distance Learning Task Force. James was previously a tenured faculty member in history.

Gerry Hanley, Senior Director, AcademicTechnology Services, CSU Chancellor's Office

Dr. GerardL. Hanley is the Executive Director of Merlot (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) and Senior Director for Academic Technology Services for the California State University, Office of the Chancellor. At MERLOT, he directs the development andsustainability of MERLOT's innovation open education resources, services and consortium of higher education institutions, professional societies, corporation, and other digital libraries. At the CSU, Gerry oversees the development and implementation of system-wide academic technolgies, digital library systems and resources, and accessible technology initiatives supporting CSU's 23 campuses serving over 400,000 students. Previously held positions in the CSU include Professor of Psychology, Director of Faculty Development and Director of Strategic Planning.

Douglas Hersh, Dean, Educational Programs, Santa Barbara City College

Dr. Douglas Hersh graduated Yale University with a triple-major Bachelor of Arts in "History, the Arts,  & Letters" and earned a Masters and Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership prior to developing several "ed tech" innovations, including the open-source human presence learning environment profiled in USA Today, Inside Higher Ed, TechEDge and other leading publications.  He has led a bold professional life with success as a creative director, documentary filmmaker, and even oil rig roustabout. A speaker, writer, avid sailor, pilot, and boat builder, Doug's true passion is invention.

Ida M. Jones, Ph.D., Professor, Craig School of Business and Director of the Center for the Scholarly Advancement of Learning and Teaching at Fresno State.

Dr. Jones focuses on faculty development and assisting faculty in the use technology to promote learning. Ida, who is the Verna Mae and Wayne D. Brooks Professor of Business Law, earned her J.D. from New York University. She has taught undergraduate and graduate business law courses in Fresno since 1987. Professor Jones has authored/coauthored instructor's manuals for business law textbooks, prepared Internet exercises for textbook publishers and published articles in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Legal Studies Education. Jim Julius, Ed.D. Faculty Director of Online Education, MiraCosta College

In his role at MiraCosta, Jim is responsible for leadership and collaboration to support student success in online learning. His work includes offering professional learning opportunities for faculty; innovating online student support services; ensuring adequate and innovative technical systems and support; conducting student orientations to online learning; working with shared governance on plans, policies, procedures, and reports; and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Jim enjoys his three teen/tween daughters, soccer, IPAs, DIY home projects, and great food shared with great friends.

Shahra Meshkaty, Senior Director, Academic Technology Services, University of San Diego

Shahra oversees the desktop, helpdesk, instructional support, digital media services, labs and academic systems support. Shahra has been an adjunct faculty at USD School of Education and Business as well as the San Diego Community College New Media Center teaching courses in business applications, web publishing and graphics design. In her current role, she oversees all aspects of teaching and learning and faculty support, works on learning space projects. Shahra serves on learning space committees and taskforces on academic technology resources.  She helped form and co-chaired the Innovative Learning Space Design Committee at USD — the first attempt to improve formal and informal learning spaces at the university. She works closely with technology partners, campus constituents and the facilities' management to update the learning spaces around campus. Involved with numerous IT projects and initiatives over the years, she launched the annual Technology Open House, the Student Technology Assistant program and, most recently, the Classroom iPad project.

Jim Monaghan, Assistant Vice President for Academic Technologies and Distributed Learning and an Associate Professor of Instructional Technology at California State University, San Bernardino

Leading teams of faculty, instructional designers and media specialists, Dr. Jim Monaghan has been responsible for the strategic development of 11 online and blended online degree programs as well as stand-alone courses with annual online and blended online enrollments exceeding 16,000.  He has also implemented robust vendor and system office relationships to optimize implementation of online and traditional degree programs.  He has managed or co-managed over $7 Million in grants and contracts which have resulted in new online programs and effective uses of online resources to aid teaching and learning.  

He led CSUB's efforts toward achieving "fast track" status with the Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC) for expedited accreditation of new online degrees.  He also led the campus WASC re-accreditation subcommittee which examined future infrastructure needs.   His published research involves reducing costs via effective management of electronic curricular materials, and cognition of students while utilizing computer simulations.

Joseph Moreau, Vice Chancellor of Technology, Foothill-De Anza Community College District

Joseph Moreau has been a technologist for over twenty-five years. He earned his BA inVisual Arts at the University of California, San Diego and his MA in Educationat Cal State Los Angeles and completed the certificate program in Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at UCLA. He began his career working as avideographer and media specialist for a variety of firms in the private sector. In 1990, he left the private sector for higher education. He has held a variety of leadership positions at the community college and university level including manager of the Instructional Resources Center at Pasadena City College; Dean of Learning Resources at West Hills College in central California; Dean of Academic Information Services at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California; and Chief Technology Officer for the State University of New York at Oswego. In the spring of 2012, he was appointed Vice Chancellor of technology and CTO for the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, overseeing technology for two of nation's premier community colleges. Joseph has served on the boards of a number of non-profit and professional organizations including the CaliforniaCommunity Colleges Chief Information Systems Officers Association, the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC), the Oracle Higher Education User Group, and the SUNY Faculty Advisory Council for Teaching and Technology.

Micah Orloff, Director, @One Project

Micah Orloff is the director of @ONE, a technology training initiative of the Chancellor's Office of the California Community Colleges. @ONE specializes in preparing faculty for teaching online effectively through a program based on nationally recognized standards for online teaching quality. Prior to @ONE, Orloff was the distance education network coordinator for Mt.San Jacinto College, where he was actively involved with technology administration, policy and procedure development, and community training andsupport for distance education.

Marsha Orr, RN, MS, Distance Education Faculty Liaison, California State University, Fullerton

Marsha Orr, RN, MS is a full-time lecturer in the School of Nursing at California State University, Fullerton and provides support to Nursing faculty in the use of technology for teaching. She received "Quality Online Teaching and Learning" recognition from the California State University system during AY 2011-2012. She also was awarded the "Daisy Teaching Award" for AY 2012-2013 for excellence in teaching which is awarded based on nomination by students and faculty of the School of Nursing.

Raymond Piña, Manager eLearning Technolgies Academic Technology & Creative Services, Sacramento State University

Raymond has implemented multiple academic technology systems and collaborated with campus departments to implement online and paper course evaluations campus-wide. He coordinates and assists with the business processes for course evaluations and other academic systems.

Derald Reedy, AV Engineering Project Manager& Designer, UC Davis

Derald Reedy has been serving with UC Davis AV Engineering as a project manager and instructional technology designer since 2007, focusing on control systems automation and the user experience. Before work in education, Derald spent many years in the audio and video industry, doing systems design, consulting, and production for live events, radio, television, and houses of worship.

Derald's strengths and experience lie in strategy, management, applied technology, and volunteer recruitment and training. He holds certifications in Digital Media Engineering and Digital Signal Processing for Audio.

Derald is active in the community serving on the board of directors for Arcade Church (http://arcadechurchonline.com) and None Go Hungry (http://www.nonegohungry.org/). Derald and his wife Marie live in the Sacramento area with their two sons.

Michael Rouan, Director, Educational Technology,Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD)

Dr. Rouan oversees the production and deployment of broadcast/online courses originating from Stanford University's School of Engineering.He has been with SCPD since 1991 assuring technical and aesthetic excellence for all SCPD productions, and directs all aspects of production for both the television and online programs. Mike serves a faculty of 200 with 10 classrooms wired for live capture producing nearly 10,000 hours of programming each year.

Mike possesses a doctorate in Education: Curriculum and Instruction from the University of San Francisco, a master's degree in Educational Technology from San Francisco State University and a bachelor's degree in Radio/Television from San Francisco State University.

Ashley Skylar, Ph.D., Director, Center for Excellence and Innovationin Online Education, Cal State Online 

Dr.Skylar is responsible for working with onboarding online programs and providing faculty development and support to instructors teaching courses in Cal State Online of the California State University Office of the Chancellor.  In this role, she works with 5 CSU campuses as they work to scale up their online programs and/or start new WASC approved programs.  She also works closely with campuses to implement Quality Assurance measures and works with select vendors who provide services for the Cal State Online Programs.  She also serves on various system-wide technology initiatives and projects.  She has over 12 years teaching online in higher education and previously taught for 9 years at the CSU Northridge campus in the Dept. of Special Education. While at the Northridge campus she was a faculty associate for the FacultyTechnology Center providing support to faculty in course redesign, preparing training guides and workshops on using online tools, developed a student online readiness survey, and was instrumental in passing an online and hybrid policy for the campus. Previous to working at CSUN, she was in IT, Professional Development and a middle school teacher for 8 years in the Las Vegas School District.

Robert Emery Smith, Director, Technology Services, Office of the Registrar, Stanford University

Robert Emery Smith is the Director of Technology Services in the Office of the Registrar at Stanford University.  He works with faculty and IT professionals to design, implement and support the use and evaluation of classroom activities using contemporary tools and media.  An experienced electromechanical engineer, Bob has a long history in commercial technology-driven, user-centered product design.  He returned to Stanford University in 2000 to direct the design team that created Wallenberg Hall, where he has overseen classroom research operations since the facility opened in 2002.  He participated in the Wallenberg Global Learning Network program "High Performance Learning Spaces," facilitating rich ethnographic research in the classrooms and enabling a cross-continental live music performance.  He continues to support Stanford faculty and the faculty at other institutions in their experiments withc lassroom-augmenting technologies.

Stefano Stefan, Director, Distance Learning Projects and Research, UC Irvine Extension

Dr. Stefano M. Stefan manages special projects involving online courses (development, quality improvement, and departmental process improvement) and maintains a relationship with UC Irvine's School of Education on various research projects involving learning analytics, the evaluation of student performance, and the effectiveness of massive, open, online courses (MOOCs). Previously, Dr. Stefan created a process for developing new online courses and developed a pair of online instructor training courses for continuing education instructors. He also managed UC Irvine Extension's information technology certificate programsand built a successful business analysis certificate program. Before enteringthe world of continuing education, Dr. Stefan worked in the petroleum and electric power industries, where he put degrees in physics and electrical engineering to good use.

Mike Truong, Founding Executive Director, Office of Innovative Teaching and Technology, Azusa Pacific University

Mike recently became the founding Executive Director of the Office of Innovative Teaching and Technology (ITT) at Azusa Pacific University(APU).  His office engages, enables, and encourages all APU faculty to fulfill their God-given potential as teachers, scholars, and members of the university and wider communities. His office offers a wide-range of training and professional development opportunities that expose new and experienced faculty to signature pedagogies and innovative technologies that promote engaged learning and effective teaching in onsite, blended, and online courses.

John Whitmer, Ed.D, Program Manager for Academic Technology & Analytics, CSU Office of theChancellor

In this capacity, John leads projects that use data from multiple sources, including academic technology usage logs, to understand student learning, identify at-risk students, and demonstrate technology adoption.  John is trained in quantitative analysis methods and social anthropology, and is very interested in how low-income and racial minority learners use technology for learning.

Priorto this position, John directed academic technology initiatives for a National Science-Foundation supported Earthquake Engineering consortium and for a system-wide professional development project for the California CommunityCollege system.  John holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UC Davis and a Master's Degree in Sociocultural Anthropology from UC Davis.
